Fixed term for 24 months, 37 hours per week
The School of Computing and Engineering boasts a vibrant and successful research environment, with over 180 academics and researchers actively engaged in ground-breaking research with real-world applications. With activities over a range of computer science and engineering disciplines, we have a large portfolio of research and innovation projects supported by funding from, for example, UKRI (EPSRC, STFC and Innovate UK), the Royal Academy of Engineering, EU Horizon Programmes, and direct industry contracts. The quality and power of our research was recognised in the recent REF (Research Excellence Framework) assessment, where most of our research and impact was assessed as being world-class or internationally leading. This is further supported by the highly prestigious award of Queens Anniversary Prizes in both 2019 and 2021 for excellence, innovation, and public benefit from our research.
As part of the University Research Fund 2022 competition, RACE-ME project, led by Dr Soufiene Djahel, was selected to advance the University’s expertise in the field of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) to efficiently support Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) services.
RACE-ME aims to design a new universal smart, mobile, secure, and connected computing platform on the wheels that meets the unique, stringent, and heterogeneous requirements of ITS applications. To support this aim we are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to lead and conduct the planned research activities of RACE-ME. As part of this role you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of experienced researchers from HUD and abroad, including the University of Electro-Communications in Japan, with expertise spanning wireless networks, CAVs, ITS and smart mobility, modelling, and AI.
To enable RACE-ME platform to function efficiently you will be involved in developing breakthrough solutions to: (i) Enhance CAVs connectivity and communication reliability. (ii) Ensure seamless integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and CAVs through efficient task offloading and routing mechanisms. (iii) and ensure accurate prediction of vehicles mobility and users’ requests pattern (i.e., the demand for CAVs resources), by developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) empowered algorithms, to achieve enhanced service provision to end-users.
With a PhD in Computer Science or a relevant field, you will be required to review existing literature, develop efficient algorithms and innovative solutions to the identified problems, implement and evaluate the performance of the developed solutions using adequate simulation tools and platforms. Collecting and analysing the data, you will create interim and final project reports, and generate high quality journal and conference papers.
Collaborating with several researchers, you will have good communication and teamwork skills and you are particularly encouraged to apply if you have a background and previous experience in conducting research on CAVs.
The School is committed to Athena SWAN principles and the promotion of equality and diversity and is proud to hold a Bronze Athena SWAN Award.
Informal enquiries are welcome to: Dr Soufiene Djahel: s.djahel@hud.ac.uk or 01484 258656
If you are a current student at the University, you are welcome to apply for part-time roles of 15 hours or less per week, unless you are a part-time postgraduate student, in which case you can also apply for full time roles, subject to any visa requirements.
